“Dan, this isn’t right. Imagine the kind of trouble you’d be in if you had ignored your Dad’s orders like this” Ben and Daniel were seated and drinking coffee in a small patio area outside Danika’s house.
He sighed but then nodded. There was no denying what his fiancé just said. Dani’s sudden detour to her own home rather than the chateau had taken even him by surprise. “I get why she’s so pissed. I am too. Just the thought that Dad lied about our mother being dead. He’s done some horrible things in his life, and this would be right at the top. But refusing to see him? That’s not going to get us any of the answers we want.”
“Do you believe this Liam guy?” Ben watched his fiancé carefully as he sipped his coffee.
For several minutes, Daniel didn’t answer, just staring at his coffee mug, his thumb tracing the stud’s logo on the front. “I want to, and I do...mostly. The DNA test, stuff he knows, and he’s pre-Immortal, it all points to the possibility. I got caught up in the excitement when they first told me, but now I’ve had time to think about it a bit. I don’t know, Ben.” He finally drank some of his coffee. “Dani wants to believe it, and perhaps he is our half brother, but for once, I understand Dad’s caution. The Watchers wanted to make me into a weapon against Dad, who’s to say someone hasn’t done the same to Liam?” He took out his phone. “I need to talk to Dad.”
It rang just once before Hsu picked it up, and Danny heard the more abrupt than usual greeting. “Before you say anything, Dad, I was as surprised as anyone when Dani changed the plans.” He paused, listening to his father, who sounded that he was trying his hardest to remain patient and calm. “She’s furious, and I’m pissed too, that you lied to us, but that’s not just it. If it had been, she would have come straight to you and had it out, and I would be right beside her. You know that. No, she wants assurance from you that Liam won’t come to any harm.” There as another pause as Hsu said something. “Yeah, she’s convinced he’s our brother.” Another pause. “I was just telling Ben, I don’t know. I’d like to think he is, I really would. And the DNA test is pretty convincing, but after everything else we’ve gone through, I want to be sure before I fully accept that he is.” Movement from around the front of the house caught his attention. “Dad, it looks like Diana just arrived. I hope she can get Dani to see some reason. I’ll talk to you later….Okay. Yeah I’ll tell her, but I don’t think she’ll like it.”
Danny was already walking over to where Diana had just pulled up. Shortly after the Amazonian demi-goddess revealed her secret to Danika, Daniel was also told that his sister was dating a real life superhero as there were no secrets between each other, but no one else in their circle, with the sole exception of Sigurd, knew Diana was better known to the world as Wonder Woman, and that especially included their father. They agreed that Hsu learning about Diana Prince’s alter-ego would not be a good idea.
Waiting until Dani and Sigurd greeted Diana, Dan gave her a warm and charming hello, kissing her lightly on her cheeks. Sigurd had helped Danika recover from that ordeal, now over a decade ago, and Diana, in the couple of years since they had started dating, had really brought Danika back to herself, but she had also encouraged her to stand up to her father in a way Danny had never managed to. They did all make a gorgeous threesome, though. Standing back from them, and a little awkwardly was Liam. Danika beckoned enthusiastically to him. “Come on, I mentioned Diana on the flightover, didn’t I?” He nodded. “Diana, this is Liam Campbell, Danny’s and mine’s half-brother.”
“I’m pleased to meet you, Liam.” The tall, beautiful woman held out her hand, her soft accented voice, friendly.
As Liam shook her hand, Dan pulled his sister aside. “I just spoke to Dad. You know you’re going to have to talk to him sooner or later, if we want to get answers about our mother. I know you’re worried about Liam, but Dad’s not stupid enough to harm him if we’re with him.” It was a relief when she nodded.
“I know, and we’ll confront him about all of this. Did he know about Mom’s life, when she died? Did he know about Liam? But I want to get Liam settled and plan with you, Ben, Sig, and Diana with how we face Dad, and I certainly don’t want to do it on his terms.” She took her brother’s hand to pull him back to the other group. “Let’s go inside and talk over what we need to do.”
Dan’s reservations were still not quelled even if he was usually first to defy Hsu, but he went with her all the same. He wanted, as much as his father, undeniable proof that Liam was who he claimed and was not being put up to this, but he knew that no amount of trying to reason with Danika would get her to change her mind. “Can we at least see if Liam’s telling us the truth? We prove that independently beyond any doubt, and we go face Dad in an even stronger position.”
“You think he’s lying to us?” Danika stopped before they got too close to Diana and the others to overhear. She sounded disappointed that Dan didn’t believe her. “Why would he do that? And he knows things that only our Mom would know.”
“I don’t know, Dani. I want to believe him, I really do, but with some of the people this family attracts, I’d like to be sure. And you know that Dad will want to be more than just sure.” Dani sighed but also nodded. Dan was right, especially about their father, no matter how much in her heart she believed Liam.
She looked at Diana. “If I can prove to you, he’s telling the absolute truth, will you back me and Liam all the way with Dad? Even if we can’t give him that same proof?”
“Of course, you know I will.” He saw her look at her girlfriend. “You’re going to ask Diana to do some superpower stuff, aren’t you?” Danika just smiled and went to join her lovers and Liam.
After a late lunch, Sigurd and Ben both quietly excused themselves to the media room to watch some football. Dani had explained her plan to Diana, and the goddess agreed to use the Lasso of Hestia on Liam with one slight change. She was not willing to reveal her identity before a man that none of them really knew, even if he was telling the truth. So, explaining to Liam that they needed to ask him some questions in order to convince their father, they also had to get his cooperation in being blindfolded.
It took some persuading to get Liam to agree, but with some gentle coaxing from Danika and assuring him that it was just because they were using a brand new piece of tech to verify points of his story that would be presented to Hsu as evidence that he could accept that Liam was exactly who he said he was. Unable to see, Diana gently placed the Lasso of Hestia around him, while Danika asked him questions. There was no question that he was being completely truthful with them.
“So Dani.” Danny said softly to her after Diana left the room and Liam removed the blindfold. “I’m convinced, but exactly how is this going to work with Dad? Given that he has no idea that you are dating Wonder Woman.”
His sister just smiled. “We’ll figure that out, won’t we? But what’s important is that we know he’s told us the truth, no matter what Dad thinks.” There was a sound of an engine coming up the sweeping driveway.
Both twins looked out of the window and a few seconds later, a motorcycle appeared. “Looks like it’s time to figure that out now.” Dan grinned as they watched Hsu pull up to the front entrance and dismounted, taking off his helmet. “The words: mountain and Mohammed spring to mind.” Hsu disappeared from view as he headed inside, one of the men clearly having already opened the door for him.
“What is it?” Liam joined them and was trying to see out of the window too.
Danny turned to his little brother. “Not to worry you, but our Dad’s here.”
